Description

Under the name of the Syrian Protestant College, the American University of Beirut first opened its doors to 16 students in December 1866, basing its educational philosophy on the American liberal arts model of higher education.

Since very early on, the university has expanded and developed its faculties and degree programmes, quickly opening a School of Medicine in 1867 and a School of Pharmacy in 1871. Today, it has six faculties with around 800 academic staff. It offers more than 130 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes to just under 8,000 students, 50 per cent of whom are women. The majority of classes are taught in English.

AUB is based at a 64-acre urban campus in the centre of the Lebanese capital, situated on the shores of the Mediterranean. It houses the AUB Medical Center, the Charles W. Hostler Student Center, the Archaeological Museum, the Natural History Museum, a Lebanese geological collection and five libraries (including the Jafet Memorial Library). The Saab Memorial Medical Library is considered among the best medical libraries in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the university’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, a 247-acre research farm, is located in the Beqa'a Valley.

Students are attracted to the university by its proximity to the city and its surroundings, from where it is possible to visit one of the oldest cedar forests in the world at Bsharre.

Notable alumni of AUB include the architect Zaha Hadid and former Lebanese prime minister Salim Al-Hoss.

AUB has a gorgeous campus that really reflects its history. Walking in you feel like you've escaped the commotion of Beirut and entered a beautiful green space. The university follows the American system, so many courses, systems, and structures are different than those in Europe. When it comes to studying, AUB is known to be very demanding, stress is fairly common due to the amount of assignments and exams as well as some bureaucracy. However, the overall ambience is a positive one, there are many clubs and societies one can join. Student life is good and there are many events that cater to many audiences. Overall, I would say my experience is a positive one due to the student life despite the stress.

I am a student at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in the program of Public Policy and International Affairs. Our professors are all experts in their fields, they help us in acquiring knowledge in the domain by the experience they share with us. The content of study is very well organized and the materials are very rich. I appreciate the student life at AUB and all the facilities it offers. In addition to attending classes and lectures, students can mostly spend all day there while being productive; whether from studying at the library, joining the various university clubs, working out at the gym, swimming in the indoor pool, accessing the university beach during summer, or many other sports activities. The tuition fees are pretty remarkable: but distinguished students can still benefit from scholarships, as well as graduate assistantships for the graduate studies (Master's programs), and others can have financial aids if needed. I highly recommend it, since studying at AUB is more than just getting a degree, it's also about the experience and the skills that the students gain during their time spent here!
