Description

Aarhus University in Denmark, founded in 1928, is among the world’s leading research-intensive universities. With over 44,000 students, it is the second largest university in the country and comprises four faculties in Arts, Science and Technology, Health, and Business and Social Sciences. Globally orientated, the university has exchange programmes in place with over 50 institutions worldwide including the University of the Arctic, the Utrecht Network, the Nordic Centre Fudan and the Nordic Centre India. More than 60 degree programmes are taught in English and 12% of its students are international, representing more than 100 nationalities between them. While its main campus is located in Aarhus – Denmark’s second largest city, in the centre of the country – it has other campuses in Emdrup, near Copenhagen, and Herning on the Jutland peninsula. The university also lays claim to leading research facilities: the Aurora, a shipping vessel that serves as a floating lab for biologists, geologists and ocean researchers, the supercomputer GenomeDK, used to develop medical therapies, a robotic telescope in Tenerife and various stations throughout Greenland. It is also home to the Museum of Ancient Art, a planetarium, parkland, an outdoor amphitheatre, botanical gardens, an annual boat race, and distinctive architecture. In keeping with its collaborative emphasis, Aarhus has research partnerships with a multitude of industrial and governmental organisations, including Smart Cities, the Centre for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises and institutions that work to address issues surrounding energy, the environment, food, agriculture, health and education. The university’s alumni include Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, the CEO of Lego, Prince Frederik of Denmark and Anders Fogh Rasmussen, former Prime Minister of Denmark and a Secretary General of NATO. It has associations with two Nobel Laureates: Jens Christian Skou in Chemistry (1997) and Dale T Mortensen in Economics (2010). On the site of a former Viking settlement, Aarhus itself constitutes one of Denmark’s fastest growing cities with a young population and a renowned musical heritage. Concert halls and live music venues are in plentiful supply and each year the city plays host to the eight-day SPOT music festival.

While doing PhD at Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (AU), I have found a lot of opportunities to improve my qualification (including the cleanroom experience and a variety of experimental facilities). I very much appreciate a possibility to broaden my overview because it is very easy here to communicate with everyone (Bsc/Msc/PhD students, postdocs, professors and other academic stuff). They are extremely helpful, positive and open. I also taught a few courses to the undergraduate students, realized that they normally do lots of collective work (discussions, problem solving, etc.), and was very surprised on how effective and funny their approach is. Otherwise (during Friday bars/Autumn schools/other social hangouts), it was my pleasure to communicate with energetic, curious and innovative students. If I had a chance to choose a university to study again, it would definitely be AU!

The university itself is great, based on several factors. The buildings are new, and always fully equipped with up-to-date technology. The courses are generally good structured, and there are also tutorials where you can put the theory into practice. You have the possibility to work with real companies and solve real life cases. In addition, the exams do not require from you to memorize, but to argue for your choices, and to be creative in your solutions.

Aarhus University has one of the best campi in Europe when it comes to facilities and green space. Education in the Arts Department has a high standard level with prestigious professors and demanding programs. However, due to the well-known Danish educational system, the courses are all based in group activities, cooperation and co-working, with high respect to personal limitations and adaptation to everyone standards.

The university campus is great. The level of education is very high and as students, we are provided with the opportunity of putting the theory into practice with real-life examples, cases and working with big international companies.

As an international student, I really enjoyed the atmosphere at the university. From the academic side, I have really enjoyed working in teams and solving practical business problems by applying theoretical frameworks. Therefore, the university has allowed me not only to grow academically but also be ready for business challenges. I would highly recommend Aarhus University, not only because of great student life but also the possibilities that the university provides to collaborate with companies early-on in your studies.

The MSc in Finance programme is one of the toughest of the Business School, therefore, it is a high level programme due to the level of the admitted students and the work required. However, I think the course is way too academic-focused (theoretical rather than practical). I like the competitiveness of the programme and of the students. I would definitely recommend it to a European friend (it is free tuition for EU citizens) but perhaps not for a non-European friend. The campus is small and rather old, but good enough to do all student-related tasks. The night life in Aarhus can be quite nice, it is a very young city where 15% of the city are students or young adults. I think the Career Services could play a bigger role and have more on campus recruiting as Aarhus is a leading university in Denmark.
